The Wanderstop tea shop isn’t just any tea shop. It’s bound by something ethereal. Something almost mystical. A little pocket of the universe where tending the land, brewing the perfect cup, and listening to people’s unspoken pains are all connected.
Besides growing your own strange fruits and collecting tea leaves to brew new drinks, your stay at Wanderstop also equips you with a trusty broom and garden shears. You can use these to tidy up the clearing of little piles of leaves or gnarly, spiky weeds.
It’s a feeling so many of us have but never know what to do with. That unfinished, unresolved "what if" when people leave our lives. That lingering, hollow ache of an interrupted story, when you never get to find out what happened next.
It’s about finally breaking free and starting something of our own, whether it’s a coffee shop, a bakery, a bookstore, a flower shop, or some delightful hybrid of all of the above. Something that’s ours, away from the relentless grip of shareholders and quarterly profit margins.
The UI is dressed up as a gardening guidebook, and tiny details all feel accounted for. It's easy to lose yourself momentarily in the process of brewing endless combinations, but the story hangs over your head – not quite there to strike an emotional blow, but certainly to poke and prod at uncomfortable parts of you until something clicks.
You can decorate as much as you like – fill the entire map with plants, cover the walls in photos – but Wanderstop doesn't outright ask you to do much at all. That's what makes it such a treat. Offered alongside a beautifully told story and a collection of defined challenges is unrestricted access to a virtual garden of your own design.
But the lack of full voice acting for other characters feels like a missed opportunity. Boro, in particular, would have benefitted from voice work, his presence is already powerful, but hearing his words spoken aloud could have amplified their impact. Later on in the game, an emotionally charged moment begs for a moving, climactic musical piece, yet it plays out in silence. That single misstep aside, Wanderstop delivers an audio experience that is cozy, contemplative, and effective.
The tea machine that takes up most of the tea shop is a whimsical creation right out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. All levers and spouts and chambers, each with the purpose, it seems, of elongating the tea-making process. There are many cultures throughout the world who take great pride in the time it takes to make tea, using the brewing time as a moment for meditation and taking care over each gesture.
Wanderstop is a narrative-centric game about change and tea. Playing as a fallen fighter named Elevada, you’ll manage a tea shop within a magical forest and tend Wanderstop Gameplay to the customers who pass through.
She collapses in the middle of nowhere and finds herself thrown—rather unceremoniously—into Wanderstop, a cozy tea shop run by Boro, a kind and gentle soul who offers her only one thing: rest.
That’s not a bad thing, though, as pushing you out of your comfort zone is very much the idea. By the end of my playthrough, I didn’t want to leave.
Alta's reluctance to be in her own cozy game brings a tender and sometimes sharp flavor to an otherwise calming brew of farming and cafe management. Wanderstop is a beautiful and balanced combination of sweet and savoury on the palate of the overworked, exalting the transformative power of tea.
Unfortunately, Alta's quest is cut short by her sudden inability to lift her sword. She collapses in the woods, and awakens outside an unassuming little tea shop called Wanderstop.
I find joy in the adrenaline rush of horror games, but my thrill-seeking doesn't stop there. Beyond the digital realm, I like to take on the role of designated GM in TTRPGs.
